AppleTalk does not add to the cost of a Mac-compatible printer. So what is a Mac-compatible printer? One that has circuitry to deal with Apple Talk. However, you can also get some printers in Mac-compatible form and PC-compatible form. The PC-compatible printer costs less than the Mac-compatible printer.

Lots of modern printers are "DOS compatible", even HP ones. Note that "DOS" itself has NO support for differnt printer types, merely support for sending chars to the paraellel/serial port! Any serial or parallel printer therefore is "DOS compatible" (ie but not USB ones). Nope. DOS compatibility at the very least

However, I personally think the list of compatible printers leaves a lot to be desired, like printers that are actually being sold right now. Windows' GDI layer is used to rasterize the image, and the printer itself only contains servo control hardware. I'd call that a higher level of responsibility than a DOS program driving a printer, since the DOS program only needs to send text (at minimum). A "DOS compatible" printer has its own rasterizing engine
